Accommodation Woes
May 13th 2008 11:37
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve stayed in my fair share of exquisite accommodation, mostly with my parents as it’s fairly unrealistic that I can afford luxury, but this blog is a warning of things to look out for.
Firstly, watch out for bunk beds. I stayed in a hostel room that housed eight bunk beds and in turn sixteen girls. Most of the girls I knew fairly well so the close quarter issue was not such a tragedy. However, the crash and mellowed yelp in the middle of the night did prove to be disturbing. The lights were turned on and sure enough, the top bunk, sleeping girl and all, had fallen on the girl underneath.
Secondly, always make sure the bathroom is enclosed. Our hostel in Amsterdam was in a beautiful location, extremely conveniently placed and actually quite comfortable. Because there were four of us, we managed to secure a private room on the top floor. Apparently attic space was all that they had left. The beautiful view did provide some comfort for the eight flight staircase however the open bathroom in the middle of the room was slightly uncomfortable.
Thirdly, never rely on pictures. When booking our accommodation in Venice, we were awfully misled. Because we were staying in the cheap end, we weren’t expecting much. However, the pictures looked semi-decent and the bathroom was right down the hall. When we walked through the front door we knew that something definitely was not right. Paint was peeling off the walls, windows were broken and doors were barely screwed on. We were led into our room, which was actually quite spacious, and thank goodness, it had all of its windows intact. However, with nightfall, out came the mosquitoes, and in turn a sleepless night of killing, lining our bodies and mattresses with mosquito spray and lighting mosquito coils.
Finally, no matter how much your accommodation may stink always remember to make the best of the situation that you’re put in…
