Troubled Beginnings

With sufficiently lacking funds, my boyfriend and I decided to go away for three weeks in February. We needed somewhere cheap but still nice and in order to stimulate our passion for history we needed somewhere interesting.
Our Vietnam trip was born...
Anxiously counting down the days, alas the morning of departure was upon us. We sat at our gate in Sydney Airport carefully watching the clock as it got later and later. Knowing we only had an hour to connect in Singapore, I approached the ground staff. They assured me that not only would we make up time in the air, but we would also be taken care of in Singapore.
Well, we didn't make up any time in the air and we landed with five minutes to spare before our next flight took off. We attempted to run up the bridge into the terminal but it was no use. We called our hotel in Saigon to tell them we would be running late and then proceeded to pick up our new boarding passes. Looking at the positive side, with the new three-hour wait, at least our bags would now definitely make it to Vietnam.
We landed in Saigon six hours after our scheduled arrival. We proceeded to the conveyor belt, hoping upon hopes that with some good fortune our bags would come out relatively early. No such luck...
An hour later, our backpacks come rolling. We take mine off and put it on the trolley. We lift the other bag and not only is it soaking wet, but it has the foul stench of fish and garbage.
Well this just wouldn't do...
We marched up to the luggage lost-and-found and demanded that something be done. Of course with the language barrier it did prove difficult. After half an hour of arguing, smelling our bags to prove our point and unpacking our possessions to make sure the stench was exterior, we were assured that someone would meet us at our hotel to pick up the packs and wash them. Things look good...
We arrive at our hotel, check in and proceed upstairs, only to turn around and see that the person picking up our bags for washing was already there. Miscommunication saw the driver leave without our bags. The concierge assured us that he would be back the following night and our bags would be returned with enough time before our departure to the next city.
Nevertheless, Saigon is a beautiful city. We tried not to let our baggage mishap get in the way of our sightseeing, cruising down the Mekong Delta and climbing through tunnels in the Cu Chi region.
Our bags were taken very late that night, and returned to our hotel with two hours to spare before the car picked us up to take us to our next destination.
The rest of Vietnam was unbelievable. We had many adventures, met many new people and ultimately had the time of our lives.
The message of the story... never let a flight or baggage mishap ruin the holiday of your dreams.
